Overview

A flagship Barossa Valley Shiraz of remarkable concentration and polish, Clos Otto comes from an exceptionally low-yielding vineyard planted by former owner Otto Kasper using cuttings from an old, closely guarded Shiraz clone. The 2019 delivers the richness expected of the site while retaining impressive detail, balance and finely integrated tannins. It received 96 points from Huon Hooke and was ranked #8 of 183 Barossa Valley Shiraz wines by The Real Review.

Vineyard

The Clos Otto vineyard was planted by former owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and closely guarded Shiraz clone. Traditionally tended using almost antique machinery and meticulous vineyard work, the site consistently produces exceptionally low yields with intensely concentrated flavours.

“Dark colour with a trace of purple; blackberry jam and licorice aromas, sweetly ripe, with side-notes of nutmeg and bayleaf, the palate medium-full bodied, tannins full but supple and balanced. Very full and plush across the palate. A very good wine—value is another matter! It’s fleshy and concentrated, the tannins providing a sheen across the tongue and the entire wine oozes polish and distinction.”

“This is a rich and concentrated Clos Otto with aromas of ripe red and dark plums, sarsaparilla and blueberries, as well as chocolate, spiced biscuit and violets. There’s a glimmer of whole bunches, too. The palate holds such a pure, luscious and enveloping line and has deeply intense, fine tannins that carry freshness, as well as richness. The balance is good here. Quite detailed and complex. Drink over the next decade.”
