Overview
A Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris combining ripe orchard fruit, citrus freshness and savoury complexity. Sourced from the Mill Hill and Talland Hill vineyards, the wine is handpicked, wild fermented and matured in barrel, with a powerful yet refined palate shaped by bright, briny acidity.
Vineyard
Fruit is sourced from two Mornington Peninsula sites. Mill Hill, planted in 1994, is a one-acre vineyard on a gentle northerly slope and is one of the highest and more exposed sites in the region. Its long ripening period helps retain high levels of natural acidity. Talland Hill was planted in 1992, with the majority of the vineyard situated on a north-facing slope.
Viticulture
The vineyards are farmed with a focus on sustainability and regenerative agriculture, using a combination of biological, biodynamic and organic practices.
Winemaking
The fruit is handpicked and whole-bunch pressed using a gentle Champagne press cycle. No enzymes or sulphur are used at the press tray, and the juice is handled oxidatively before being transferred to barrel with full solids and minimal sulphur addition.
Fermentation occurs naturally with wild yeast. The wine is then left unsulphured until the following summer, by which time most of the wine has completed full malolactic fermentation. A minimal amount of sulphur is added before the wine completes a total of six months in barrel. It is then racked from gross lees, transferred to tank and bottled without fining and with minimal filtration.
Producer Tasting Notes
The 2025 Polperro Pinot Gris opens with lifted citrus, coriander seed, nashi pear skin, beeswax, and subtle nutty notes. The palate is powerful yet refined, showing ripe pear, lime zest, and crème pâtissière, with a cleansing, briny acidity that drives a long, refreshing finish.
