Overview

Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz is a single-block cool-climate Shiraz from the Yarra Valley, planted in 1973 on a neighbouring property later acquired by Yarra Yering in 1988. The block has a slight west-facing slope and clay-based soils, with a perfectly suited clone unique to this site.

The 2024 Underhill is glossy, brooding and medium-bodied, combining cool-climate elegance with depth and intensity.

Tasting Notes

Blue and black berry fruits, graphite and charcuterie appear in a brooding and mysterious style. The palate is glossy and medium-bodied yet intense, with ripe black plum fruit, some charred oak barrel character and stalk tannin adding grip and driving persistence across the back palate.

Winemaking

The fruit is hand harvested and sorted before processing as whole bunches or berries. Half of the block is fermented in a 3,500L oak cask with 20% whole bunch, then pressed and returned to cask for maturation. The remaining fruit ferments in half-tonne open fermenters and is hand plunged twice daily. Pressed to release the last fermenting juice, the wine is aged for 12 months, with 50% in a five-year-old 3,500L cask and 50% in French oak puncheons, including 10% new oak.

Cellaring

Typically one of the Yarra Yering wines to shine earlier, this 2024 release has serious cellaring capacity. It will shine at 5-10 years, yet with proven pedigree will continue evolving over 10+ years under suitable conditions.
