Overview
One of Yarra Yeringâs flagship wines, Dry Red Wine No.2 is a Shiraz-led blend with a small addition of Viognier. The 2024 vintage combines floral perfume, vibrant red and dark fruit, savoury spice and firm sinewy tannins in a complex, medium-bodied style with exceptional ageing potential.
Vineyard
The Shiraz includes vines from Yarra Yeringâs original 1969 vineyard establishment, supplemented by additional plantings made throughout the 1990s as neighbouring land was acquired. The small Viognier component comes from vines planted between 1984 and 1995.
Winemaking
The fruit was hand picked, chilled overnight and passed across a sorting table before being destemmed directly into Yarra Yeringâs half-tonne open fermenters. As much whole berry as possible was retained to encourage perfume. A small number of fermenters received frozen Viognier skins, reflecting the tiny yields in 2024. The wine was matured for 15 months in French oak barriques, including 35% new oak, before blending and bottling.
Producer Tasting Notes
Complex and layered; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is a melting pot of violets, raspberry, plums, a whisker of bramble, fragrant five spice and black olive. Moderate in weight; the summer pudding fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue and a dry spice finish coupled by firm sinewy tannins that ably support the fruit.
Cellaring
Approachable in its youth, the wine will soften and gain complexity with age. Its proven track record supports evolution for 20+ years under suitable cellaring conditions, while medium-term ageing will also be rewarding.
