Overview
One of Yarra Yeringâs flagship wines, Dry Red Wine No.1 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend built for long-term ageing. The 2024 vintage combines dark berry fruit, bay leaf, graphite and warming spice with glossy texture, fine tannins and impressive depth.
Vineyard
The Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Block No.1 were among Yarra Yeringâs first plantings, giving the wine its name. Malbec was also part of the original 1969 vineyard establishment, while Merlot was initially interplanted with Cabernet before further plantings in 1990 alongside Petit Verdot.
Winemaking
The fruit was hand harvested and sorted, with only the best berries retained. Cabernet Sauvignon was crushed to build structure, while Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot underwent whole berry fermentation to enhance fragrance and weight. Most parcels were fermented in half-tonne fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. One third of the Cabernet fermented in a 3,500L oak cask with up to eight weeks on skins for added complexity. The balance was matured for 15 months in French oak barriques, including 35% new oak.
Producer Tasting Notes
Blue and black berry fruits with a comforting, rustic iodine feel, complemented by some bay leaf lift. Warming clove spice, a hint of graphite and background oak char bring both flavour and tannin. Glossy, plump fruit, energy and fine tannins form a solid foundation for a long future. Complex and layered, never intimidating but exciting to watch evolve, this vintage is particularly complete on release.
Cellaring
Under suitable cellaring conditions, the wine is expected to evolve for 20+ years while remaining enjoyable throughout its development.
