Wendouree is closely tied to the old-vine history of South Australia’s Clare Valley, where Alfred Percy Birks established the vineyard in 1893. Its Shiraz offers a compelling alternative to softer, immediately generous styles: a wine whose attraction lies as much in its savoury character and structure as in its fruit.

The 2024 Shiraz comes from the estate’s Eastern vineyard plantings of 1919. That specific origin matters: this is the straight Shiraz bottling, distinct from Wendouree’s Shiraz blends. It is a young release to approach for its energy and potential, rather than the mellow textures or developed flavours of an older cellar selection.

The vintage’s published tasting profile points towards dark berry fruit with cooling herbal notes, liquorice and spice, backed by cedar and a savoury, earthy undertone. On the palate, the emphasis is on concentration within a medium- to full-bodied frame. Bright acidity and a pronounced, grainy tannin structure provide definition, with fruit and savoury detail continuing into the finish.

This is a particularly suitable choice for drinkers who enjoy firm, structured Shiraz and are willing to give it time. Further cellaring should allow the youthful elements to become more integrated, although development always depends on storage. If opening young, taste on opening and use a decanter if the wine seems closed; revisit it during the meal rather than expecting every detail to emerge immediately. Serve slightly below room temperature in a generous red-wine glass.
