Overview
One of Chablis' most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards, Montée de Tonnerre is renowned for producing wines of exceptional mineral intensity, concentration and finesse. The 2024 release from Domaine Moreau-Naudet combines ripe orchard fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable chalky precision. Sourced from a prime parcel bordering the Grand Cru slopes, this is a beautifully layered, elegant and cellar-worthy Chablis, awarded 94 points by both Tim Atkin and Decanter.
Vineyard
Montée de Tonnerre lies on the right bank of the Serein River, close to the prestigious Chablis Grand Cru vineyards. Its sandy, rocky topsoil is rich in Kimmeridgian limestone, contributing to the vineyard's distinctive mineral character and natural freshness.
Moreau-Naudet farms approximately one hectare within the Chapelot lieu-dit, separated from Grand Cru Les Blanchots by a narrow ravine. The vineyard comprises two adjoining parcels, one planted approximately 50 years ago and another more recently replanted. This exceptional terroir delivers wines with impressive concentration, saline minerality and refined structure.
Viticulture & Winemaking
The domaine follows organic viticultural practices, with careful soil cultivation, low yields and hand harvesting to achieve optimal ripeness. Grapes are gently pressed and fermented using indigenous yeasts.
The wine undergoes extended maturation on lees, with the domaine traditionally using approximately 30% seasoned oak barrels alongside stainless steel for its Premier Cru wines. This restrained oak influence enhances texture and complexity while preserving the purity of the Chardonnay fruit and the distinctive mineral expression of Montée de Tonnerre.

“it is built around a taut, chalky core and offers slightly more depth and amplitude than Moreau’s other premier crus this year.”
Producer
Domaine Moreau-Naudet is a highly regarded family estate in Chablis, known for its richly textured, mineral-driven Chardonnay and traditional approach to winemaking. Stéphane Moreau transformed the domaine after taking over from his father in 1993, emphasising meticulous vineyard management, low yields, natural fermentations and extended maturation on lees.
Following Stéphane's passing in 2016, his wife Virginie Moreau continued the estate's philosophy. Today, the domaine cultivates approximately 26 hectares across Chablis, producing expressive, terroir-driven wines from Petit Chablis through to Grand Cru.
