Overview

Castagna Growers' Selection Savagnin is made from Savagnin sourced outside the estate. Whole bunch pressed and sent directly to barrel, with a portion matured in ceramic egg, it is a textural and aromatic expression of the variety, combining ripe orchard fruit with distinctive saline acidity and savoury complexity.

Winemaking

The Savagnin was whole bunch pressed and went straight to barrel, with a portion in ceramic egg.

Producer Tasting Notes

Castagna: “We see immediately Savagnin’s trademark of curry powder, stone fruit and camomile which are subtle but evident – highly aromatic, with a perfume, reminiscent of wild sea aromas then quince, ripe apple, and ever so slight caramel note which adds to complexity. The palate with its salty acidity underpins the fruit – ripe apple, some bosco pear and perhaps even a hint of preserved lemon. Complex, and interesting, a wonderful expression of the variety.”

Critic Reviews

94/100 — Huon Hooke: “Full yellow colour. A blend of Castagna's own and a King Valley grower. Rich, ripe, honeyed wine with great character and charm, a touch of vanilla, the volume of flavour enlivened and given tension by mouth-watering acidity. Tastes like there's some botrytis but I'm told there wasn't. A totally delicious wine. (Barrel fermented and allowed malolactic)”

Mike Bennie, The Winefront: “Highly aromatic style, quite rich perfume as savagnin does, firstly sea spray aromas then quince, ripe apple, faint caramel notes but doesn’t appear to be ripe or overdone, just an element of complexity. Textural and rich feeling again in the palate, salty acidity underpinning ripe apples, pear, some preserved lemon characters. Complex, wonderful expression and wholly its own.”
