Overview
The 2023 Sons of Eden Romulus Barossa Valley Old Vine Shiraz is a powerful yet polished expression of treasured Barossa vines. Named after the legendary founder of Rome, Romulus represents the stronger and more opulent side of the Barossa Shiraz story, shaped by old vineyards from Nuriootpa and Light Pass.
Vintage & Winemaking
The 2023 vintage was outstanding for low-yielding old vine Shiraz vineyards, producing concentrated, vibrant wines with strong ageing potential. To qualify for the Romulus blend, vineyards must be over 50 years old, with this release sourced from 80+ year old Shiraz vines in Nuriootpa, 80+ year old vines in Light Pass and 60+ year old vines in Light Pass.
The fruit was hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. It was chilled for five days before naturally warming to begin fermentation. After approximately 20 days on skins, the ferments were pressed to a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, with 45% new oak. The wine was matured for 18 months without racking, then carefully blended, naturally clarified and bottled without filtration.
