Overview

The 2023 Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz captures the savoury detail and measured structure of this single Adelaide vineyard. It combines fragrant fruit with mineral and spice accents, shaped by a long growing season.

Vintage & Winemaking

A wet winter replenished the soils; a cool spring delayed budburst and flowering. Harvest extended through March, allowing flavour and tannin development. Maturation lasted 17 months in French oak barriques (34% new) and American oak hogsheads (33% new).

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep purple with a crimson rim.

Aroma: Liquorice and plum meet juniper, mushroom, chocolate, cherry and rose.

Palate: Savoury quince and mineral notes are accented by paprika, sumac and black pepper. Ripe, powdery tannins are integrated with a fine line of acidity.

About the Producer

Penfoldsā€™ original Magill winery was established in 1844 on Adelaideā€™s eastern fringe. Magill Estate Shiraz, first made in 1983, preserves the identity of that vineyard through a single-site wine grown, vinified and matured at Magill. Hand picking, open fermentation and basket pressing remain central to its traditional approach.
