Steve Leszczynski ā Qwine Ā· 96/100 Ā· 2023 Vintage
āOnce known as the āRed Hillā in the Single Vineyard range, the Montalto North One Pinot Noir vines sit beside The Eleven Chardonnay block. A proven performer in the past, this 2023 has torched the previous release. Absolutely brilliant, this is something to behold⦠Treat yourself - you won't be disappointed.ā
Jane Faulkner ā Halliday Wine Companion 2025 Ā· 95/100 Ā· 2023 Vintage
āComing off a difficult cool/wet season has not affected North One and this is the most complete and complex of the single-vineyard offerings. Highly fragrant, all cherries and spice, raspberries and leaves, too, with baking spices and rooibos tea; earthy and autumnal. Compelling. Mid-weighted, with supple tannins and mouth-watering acidity. Poised and will garner more complexity in time.ā
Campbell Mattinson ā The Wine Front Ā· 95/100 Ā· 2023 Vintage
āMontalto makes impeccable wines. Itās a producer you can rely on. This release is cherried and strawberried, as a base, though tomato leaf, cedarwood, sweet spice and undergrowth characters all play roles. Thereās plenty going on here but it is, all the same, a wine built on structure. Juicy, strawberried, integrated acidity races throughout. Tannin, which comes across as twigs rolled in velvet, is a key feature too, though not at the expense of the fruitās momentum. Iād give it a few years but this wine will develop into something excellent.ā
Erin Larkin ā The Wine Advocate Ā· 2023 Vintage
āThe 2023 North One Pinot Noir is floral and precisely red fruited. The palate is all forest floor and autumn leaves, dried mint and cocoa powder. Pretty, in a word. Apple-like acidity through the finish is cleansing and sweet.ā
About This Wine
The North One Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard wine from Montalto, located beside The Eleven Chardonnay block on the Mornington Peninsula. The 2023 vintage is described as a classic expression of the region.
Grapes were hand harvested, sorted, and cold soaked for between three and seven days prior to the onset of wild fermentation. After pressing, the wine was lightly racked to French oak barriques, with 30% new oak, where natural malolactic fermentation took place. The wine was matured in barrel for ten months.
About the Winery
John Mitchell and family established Montalto in 1998, with the core vineyard plantings dating back to 1986. The estate is planted to pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, shiraz, tempranillo and sauvignon blanc.
The vineyards are managed with intensive canopy work, with yields of 3.7ā6.1 tonnes per hectare. Wines are released across three ranges: the flagship Single Vineyard wines, Montalto Estate wines and Pennon Hill. Montalto also leases several external vineyards across the Mornington Peninsula, increasing site and clone diversity.
Montalto acknowledges that it is located on the lands and waters of the Bunurong / Boon Wurrung people, members of the Kulin Nation, and pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
