Kooyong, based on the Mornington Peninsula, is one of Australia’s foremost cool-climate Pinot Noir specialists. With a philosophy centred on minimal intervention, precision viticulture, and single-vineyard expression, the estate produces wines of remarkable purity and site distinction. Ferrous is one of Kooyong’s most acclaimed single-vineyard wines — known for its power, structure, and mineral depth.
Vineyard
The Ferrous vineyard sits on reddish-brown clay loam rich in iron oxide — the defining element that gives this cuvée both its name and its unmistakable character. These soils, combined with north-facing slopes and meticulous hand farming, yield Pinot Noir of concentration, spice, and firm yet fine tannin structure. Indigenous yeast fermentation, partial whole-bunch inclusion, and maturation in French oak barriques (a restrained portion new) bring complexity while preserving vineyard transparency.
Vintage
The 2023 vintage on the Mornington Peninsula delivered cool, even ripening with excellent fruit purity and natural acidity. The year’s long, steady season produced Pinot Noir of lifted aromatics, fine tannins, and exceptional balance — a classical cool-climate profile with outstanding ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Kooyong Ferrous Pinot Noir opens with aromas of dark cherry, raspberry, blood orange, and spice, layered with hints of ironstone, tea leaf, and subtle earth. The palate is medium-bodied yet powerful in shape, showing concentrated red and black fruits, savoury spice, and a firm mineral backbone. Fine, chalky tannins provide structure and drive, leading into a long, detailed, and resonant finish. Complex, textural, and distinctly “Ferrous.”
