The 2023 Elderton Helbig 1915 Shiraz 750ml is a rare and limited single-vineyard Shiraz from Barossa Valley, produced from a remarkable old-vine site planted by the Helbig family in 1915. With only 699 bottles produced, this release represents one of Elderton’s most distinctive and collectible expressions of Barossa Shiraz.
Located on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley, the Helbig 1915 vineyard has long been regarded as a highly sought-after old-vine parcel. Elderton acquired the vineyard in 2010, securing access to fruit of exceptional concentration, history, and regional identity.
The 2023 season began with good spring rainfall and mild conditions, leading to delayed budburst and a longer ripening period. This allowed the fruit to develop depth and structure while retaining balance and clarity.
Due to the tiny production volume, the fruit was fermented in puncheons with the heads removed. After destemming, the fruit underwent cold soak, followed by gentle plunging during fermentation. The wine was then held briefly on skins to build tannin structure and balance.
The wine shows brooding red fruits with spicy oak overtones, dark purple colour, and flavours of plums, spiced red berries, and dark chocolate. The palate finishes with silken long tannins and focused fruit power.
After pressing, the wine was kept on lees in new French oak until after malolactic fermentation, then matured for a further year before bottling.
A highly limited Barossa Shiraz for collectors seeking old-vine provenance, depth, and Elderton’s most exclusive single-vineyard expression.
