About This Wine
Clos des Varoilles is a 6-hectare monopole in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin within the Combe Lavaux.
Domaine Prieuré Roch acquired the vineyard and produces two wines from the site. Clos des Varoilles is described as the finest and most detailed expression from the monopole.
The wine is sourced from the southern section of the vineyard, where optimum exposure contributes finesse and elegance.
The 2023 vintage was described by Yannick Champ as a warm, generous year producing ripe, balanced wines that are deeply expressive of their terroir.
Harvest commenced on 9 September and was completed in eight days with a picking team of 180 people to avoid sunburn damage during the warm conditions.
Yannick Champ and cellar master Antonio Quari regard 2023 as a vintage that produced extremely satisfying wines, with lower alcohol levels than 2022 and 2020 and a very good balance of alcohol and acidity.
About the Producer
Domaine Prieuré Roch was established in 1988 by Henri Frédéric Roch, who also served as Co-Director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
His objective was to produce wines from exceptional vineyards that express site and season without the influences of conventional wine production, including no chemicals in the vineyard and no additions to the wines, including no added sulphites.
The domaine is now led by Yannick Champ, who has worked at Domaine Prieuré Roch for more than twenty years and continues the philosophy established by Henri Roch.
Vinification is conducted with 100% whole-cluster fermentation with traditional punching down and gravity-fed remontage. There is no fining or filtering and all fermentations are completed with native yeasts.
