90/100 — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion · 2023 Vintage · Published: 26 August 2024
“The Stoney Vineyard Pinot Noir has been on hiatus for a few years as the vineyard was re-established, and I must say, it's nice to see it back. There is a wash of ripe plum, cherry and raspberry fruits on display along with spice, blueberry pie, chocolate, pomegranate and earth. It's a fruit-forward style, some nutty, spicy oak in the wings with fine-grained tannin and a medium-length finish.”
About This Wine
Just what the doctor ordered. An incredibly pretty, refined Pinot Noir (given its youth), ripe and rewarding from nose to finish.
Rich dark fruit and spice lead the nose, with hints of mint-leaf confectionery and apple. The palate shows red cherry, chocolate, sandalwood, vanilla and ginger, with light but present acidity and velvety, supple tannins. Complex, youthful and deeply satisfying.
About the Winery
Domaine A was founded on a grand cabernet plan: to produce big, Bordeaux-inspired wines in southern Tasmania, honouring Old World ideals in a cool-climate setting. Its vines are grown on an eleven-hectare single vineyard, Stoney Vineyard, first planted in 1973 in the historic Coal River Valley and shaped by a temperate maritime climate, a long growing season and ancient Jurassic dolerite soils.
The estate’s philosophy is uncompromising: let the fruit do the talking and don’t be afraid to wait. Fruit is hand-plucked, hand-tied and hand-picked, with hands-on work in the winery, and wines are released only when they are at their best. Alongside its flagship Domaine A wines, the Stoney Vineyard label offers a more immediate, drink-now expression of fruit, method and terroir.
