1.5L Magnum Bottle.
Overview
Yarra Yering Underhill Shiraz is an acclaimed single-vineyard, cool-climate Shiraz from a distinctive block planted in 1973. Whole-berry and whole-bunch fermentation, gentle extraction and large-format French oak maturation produce a balanced, medium-bodied wine with significant cellaring potential.
Vineyard
The fruit comes from a single eight-acre Shiraz block on a neighbouring property acquired by Yarra Yering in 1988. Its west-facing slope and clay-based soils are particularly suited to cool-climate Shiraz. The original clone is unknown and remains unique to this vineyard.
Winemaking
The fruit was harvested by hand and sorted before being divided into whole bunches and whole berries. Half of the block fermented in a 3500L oak cask with 20% whole-bunch inclusion, while the remainder fermented in half-tonne open fermenters with twice-daily hand plunging. The wine matured for 12 months, with 50% in a three-year-old 3500L oak cask and 50% in French oak puncheons, including 10% new oak.
Producer Tasting Notes
āDark fruits; brooding and mysterious. Cool-climate Shiraz, deliciously medium-bodied. Think charcuterie, graphite, and aniseed spice. Blue and black plums add fruit concentration, layered with liquorice spice, cured meat, and a smoky-char whisper. Medium-weighted, driven by fruit purity, with oak as a faint seasoning alongside subtle stalk grip.ā

āFrom a shiraz vineyard planted in 1973 adjacent to Yarra Yering. A vivid crimson purple colour, a mix of whole-bunch and berry fermentation and maturation in large format French oak. This is a glorious shiraz, bursting with life and what will surely be a 40-year life span, so perfectly framed and balanced are its black cherry and blackberry fruit duo, tannins obediently bending the knee to the fruit.ā
