The 2022 Yalumba The Signature is the latest release of one of Australia's most iconic red wine blends, representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship from Australia's oldest family-owned winery. First produced in 1962, The Signature is created only from the finest vineyard parcels and each vintage honours an individual who has made a significant contribution to the Yalumba story. The 2022 vintage is dedicated to Paul Midolo, Executive Director of Sales for Australia and New Zealand, recognising his outstanding contribution to the business.
The 2022 vintage benefited from excellent seasonal conditions across the Barossa Valley. Winter rainfall replenished groundwater reserves, while a mild spring and moderate summer allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. These conditions delivered exceptional flavour development, freshness, and balance.
The blend comprises 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz, sourced entirely from the Barossa Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon was selected from two premium vineyards, providing the lifted aromatics and structural backbone for which The Signature is renowned. The Shiraz component originates from vineyards with an average vine age of 52 years, including plantings dating back to 1925, contributing richness, depth, and complexity.
Fermented with wild yeasts in open-top stainless steel fermenters and matured for 18 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak, including 21% new oak, the wine displays remarkable harmony between fruit, tannin, and oak.
A deep, dense crimson in colour, the bouquet reflects the cool season with beautifully defined aromas of red and purple berries, blackcurrant, black cherry, red liquorice, cedar, mint, and subtle herbaceous notes. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, revealing layers of dark fruit, bay leaf, toasted spice, and fine oak complexity. Flowing tannins and vibrant freshness provide exceptional balance and length, resulting in a wine of elegance, power, and longevity.
While already approachable with decanting, the 2022 Signature possesses the structure and pedigree to evolve gracefully for 15 years or more, continuing the legacy of one of Australia's great Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz blends.
