James Halliday – Mike Bennie
90/100
2022 Vintage · Tasted: 28 Feb 2024 · Drink: 2025–2030
“This wine sees around 60% whole bunches in the ferment. It is matured in French oak for 16 months. Quite a rich, round and soft pinot noir, lots of raspberry coulis, shortbread and ginger biscuit elements, prune/fig/date dried fruit characters, spicy, cedar and clove wood notes over it all. It feels rich, leaning into its hedonistic capabilities and feeling a touch out of synch with cool climate pinosity, and poise that comes with that. More a pinot noir for shiraz lovers, or something similar. In that, done pretty well, but the overtness of the wine, the warmth and dried/stewed fruits, is a touch much in the balance stakes right now.”

About This Wine

The Adelaide Hills experienced an exceptional 2022 vintage following a wet winter and spring, then a dry and mild summer. This resulted in a long ripening period that supported flavour development while maintaining natural acidity.

This 777 clone Pinot Noir is sourced from a single vineyard located just outside the township of Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills, situated 421 metres above sea level. The grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch fermented, with foot stomping and light pump overs as required. The wine spent 15 days on skins before being racked and matured in French oak barriques for 16 months. Total production was limited to 1,700 bottles.

Tasting Notes

Crimson and scarlet in colour with pink hues. Aromas of black cherry and plum are layered with nutmeg, cardamom and clove. The palate is medium-bodied, with black fruit and plum filling the mid-palate, finishing with dark chocolate, mocha and Chinese five spice on an elegant, lingering finish.
