Overview

The 2022 Racines Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay is a regional cuvĂ©e assembled from several vineyard parcels, designed to express the breadth of this cool Californian appellation. Rather than isolating one site, it brings together established vineyards and the team’s own de Montille Estate.

Wenzlau Family Vineyard, La Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict contribute alongside the estate fruit. This range of origins is central to the wine’s identity, reflecting Racines’ interest in the region as a whole as well as in its individual sites.

Vintage & Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in a combination of 500-litre puncheons, 350-litre barrels and 228-litre barriques. Approximately 20% of the French oak is new, allowing the team to work with different vessel sizes within the blend.

After 11 months in oak, the wines are transferred with their lees to stainless steel for a further five months of maturation. The two-stage élevage gives the cuvée an extended period in the cellar before release, while keeping its regional expression at the centre of the process.

About the Producer

Racines brings together Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy with Rodolphe PĂ©ters of Champagne. Their project applies the experience of two French winegrowing traditions to the cool climate of California’s Sta. Rita Hills, seeking wines that express their vineyard origins with clarity.
