The 2022 Clonakilla Ceoltóirí brings a Southern Rhône-inspired red blend to the Canberra District. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz form part of its varietal composition, alongside Counoise, offering a different expression of the estate from its better-known Shiraz Viognier.

Ceoltóirí is the Irish word for a band of musicians. The name reflects the idea of several varieties contributing to one wine, while its inspiration comes from founder John Kirk’s appreciation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The identity remains firmly rooted in Clonakilla’s Australian home at Murrumbateman.

About the Producer

John Kirk established Clonakilla in 1971 after purchasing a 44-acre farm near Murrumbateman, north of Canberra. He named it after his grandfather’s farm in County Clare; Clonakilla means ‘meadow of the church’.

The estate’s story has developed around the relationship between site and variety. Its soils include a reddish parna layer over clay and decomposed volcanic material, while the family’s work has remained focused on expressing the character of this landscape through wine.
