The 2022 Balnaves of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is a beautifully balanced Bordeaux-style blend that showcases the elegance and finesse of Coonawarra's world-famous Terra Rossa soils. Produced by Balnaves of Coonawarra, this estate-grown wine combines the structure and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon with the plush texture and generosity of Merlot, resulting in a refined and approachable red with excellent ageing potential.

Established in 1975, Balnaves has earned a reputation as one of Coonawarra's leading family-owned wineries, consistently producing wines that express the unique character of the region. Sourced exclusively from estate vineyards, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot benefit from Coonawarra's cool maritime climate and long growing season, allowing the fruit to develop exceptional flavour intensity while retaining freshness and natural balance.

The excellent 2022 vintage provided ideal ripening conditions, producing fruit of outstanding purity, vibrant acidity, and fine tannin maturity. Each variety was harvested and vinified separately before careful blending to achieve harmony and complexity.

Following fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak barrels, adding subtle cedar spice and texture while preserving the vibrant fruit profile. The result is a wine that is both immediately appealing and capable of graceful cellaring.

The bouquet is expressive and inviting, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, red plum, and black cherry, complemented by notes of cedar, mint, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and subtle dried herbs. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, displaying concentrated dark fruit, silky Merlot texture, fine Cabernet tannins, and lively acidity. Elegant oak integration and a long, savoury finish complete this classic Coonawarra blend.
