Winemakers Comments:
The 2021 growing season was exceptional, characterized by mild temperatures and average rainfall, resulting in good yields and well-balanced flavors across all grape varieties.Ā Winter brought average rainfall and temperatures, providing ample moisture for the season.Ā This favorable trend continued into Spring, although warmer temperatures than usual prompted an early start to the growing season.Ā Optimal conditions during flowering resulted in satisfactory yields across all varieties, which was particularly welcomed after the smaller production of 2020.Ā Unfortunately, a couple of our older blocks didn't fully recover from the previous year, resulting in some reduction, but overall we were content with the outcome.Ā Spring remained warm, accompanied by good rainfall that extended into summer.Ā While December and February were dry, January experienced several wet days, with some rainfall exceeding 40mm.Ā The mild conditions caused the start of harvest to be in early March, which is preferable to the hotter daytime temperatures typically observed in February.
Our Pinot Noirs from this vintage display a delicate and perfumed character, yet they retain their intensity and tannic structure, which lends them great presence.Ā They evoke memories of some of the outstanding cooler vintages, where the balance between tannins, fruit, and aromatics was simply perfect.
Critic tasting note: (2021 vintage) "A fine nose of bing cherry, sassafras, bergamot and vanilla, doused with a piquant smokiness from 100% whole bunch. The bunches confer a verdant, astringent edge to the finish. This is a mid-weighted pinot of considerable complexity, reflecting the contemporary Australian zeitgeist. There is, mercifully, little overt sweetness about it. While it should age well, I question the merit of this herbal undertone from the under-ripe bunch inclusion. Dill pickle is not a positive aroma. Drink or hold." -Ā 92/100,Ā James Suckling
