2021 Schubert Estate 'The Hatchling' Shiraz 750ml

Overview

The Hatchling is Schubert Estate’s generous, fruit-driven expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz. It draws on selected parcels from across the estate’s Roennfeldt Road vineyard together with fruit from neighbouring vineyards in Marananga, showcasing the richness and depth for which western Barossa Shiraz is renowned.

Vineyard

Schubert Estate’s Roennfeldt Road vineyard is divided into distinct blocks reflecting variations in soil, elevation and topography. Within these blocks, plumper, larger-berried Shiraz bunches are isolated and vinified separately, with selected fruit from neighbouring Marananga vineyards complementing the estate-grown component.

For the 2021 wine, Dave Brookes notes that fruit was sourced from Block 2 of the Schubert Estate vineyard, where light sandy loams lie over red-brown clays.

Viticulture

Schubert Estate follows a low-intervention, site-focused approach to viticulture, managing individual vineyard blocks according to their particular soils, varieties and growing conditions. The estate is certified with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.

Producer

The Schubert family established its Roennfeldt Road property in the Barossa Valley in 1915. Today the estate vineyards are located along Roennfeldt Road and Neldner Road in the Marananga sub-region, with individual blocks reflecting the diverse geology and landscape of the western Barossa Valley. Winemaker Matt Reynolds brings two decades of experience to the estate, with a strong focus on site expression and sustainable vineyard and winery practices.
