Established in 1975, Balnaves remains one of Coonawarra's leading family-owned wineries, with a strong reputation for producing estate-grown wines of exceptional consistency and regional character. The vineyards are planted on the famous Terra Rossa soils over limestone, where the cool maritime climate and long growing season provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon to develop intense flavour, fine tannins, and remarkable balance.

The outstanding 2021 vintage is regarded as one of the finest in recent years. A mild, extended growing season allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, producing fruit with exceptional concentration, vibrant natural acidity, and beautifully refined tannins.

The fruit was hand-selected from premium estate vineyard blocks before fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels. Careful oak integration enhances complexity and texture while allowing the classic Coonawarra fruit profile to remain the focus.

The bouquet is intensely aromatic, displaying classic aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, and dark plum, layered with notes of cedar, mint, tobacco leaf, graphite, dark chocolate, and subtle dried herbs. As the wine opens, hints of violet and savoury spice add further complexity.

The palate is medium- to full-bodied, elegant, and beautifully structured. Concentrated black fruit flavours are supported by fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and seamlessly integrated French oak. Rich without excessive weight, the wine delivers exceptional balance, precision, and a long, persistent finish highlighted by cassis, cedar, and graphite.
