The 2021 Balnaves of Coonawarra Shiraz is a refined cool-climate Shiraz that showcases the elegance, purity, and regional character of one of Australia's premier wine regions. Produced by Balnaves of Coonawarra, this estate-grown Shiraz combines vibrant fruit, savoury complexity, and fine structure in a style that is unmistakably Coonawarra.
Established in 1975, Balnaves is one of Coonawarra's most respected family-owned wineries. While internationally renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate's Shiraz has quietly become a benchmark for cool-climate Australian Shiraz, offering perfume, spice, and finesse rather than sheer power.
The outstanding 2021 vintage delivered near-perfect growing conditions throughout Coonawarra. A mild, extended growing season allowed the fruit to ripen slowly, producing Shiraz with exceptional aromatic intensity, natural acidity, and beautifully refined tannins.
Fruit was harvested from selected estate vineyard blocks planted on the region's famous Terra Rossa soils over limestone. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak barrels, adding subtle texture and complexity while allowing the purity of the fruit to remain the focus.
The bouquet is expressive and layered, offering aromas of blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, and ripe plum, complemented by cracked black pepper, violet, liquorice, cedar, dark chocolate, and subtle spice. Delicate notes of dried herbs and earthy minerality add further complexity.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, elegant, and beautifully balanced. Vibrant dark berry fruits are supported by silky tannins, fresh natural acidity, and finely integrated French oak. The wine finishes long and savoury, with lingering notes of spice, black fruits, and subtle mocha, reflecting both the cool-climate vintage and Balnaves' restrained winemaking philosophy.
Already drinking beautifully, the 2021 Balnaves Shiraz has the balance and structure to continue evolving gracefully over the next 10–15 years.
