Produced by Pegasus Bay in North Canterbury’s Waipara Valley, Virtuoso represents the pinnacle of the estate’s Chardonnay program, crafted only in exceptional vintages from the finest vineyard parcels.
Waipara Valley’s dry climate, long growing season, and limestone-rich soils provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay, allowing slow ripening and the development of intense flavour while retaining vibrant acidity. The excellent 2020 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional purity and balance, resulting in a wine of both power and finesse.
In the winery, fruit was hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in French oak barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak. Extended lees maturation and regular bâtonnage contributed texture, complexity, and integration, while careful winemaking preserved freshness and mineral precision.
The wine opens with layered aromas of white peach, nectarine, citrus curd, and grapefruit, intertwined with notes of toasted hazelnut, brioche, flint, and subtle smoky oak. The palate is rich yet beautifully structured, showing concentrated stone fruit, creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish with exceptional persistence.
