2019 Utopos (E)utopos Shiraz 750ml

The 2019 (ε)utopos is built around the oldest shiraz planting on the site.  A tiny 0.4 Hectare block planted on a red clay and ironstone section of the vineyard in 1974 to the famous Kalimna 3C clone of shiraz, prized for its density of deep colour and dark fruited aromatics and flavours.  The 2019 wines are brightly fruited and tightly wound with the tannins holding everything in as young wines.  An additional 3%  of Block 5 Cabernet Sauvignon expresses some complexing tobacco leaf and cigar box characters plus 2% Mataro enhancing the blue fruit and herbal notes.  Matured for 20 months in 50% new very tight grained lightly toasted French oak (Allier forest) and 50% second use and then further matured in bottle almost 2 years before release.  This wine is demanding of a few more years in the cellar before it will show its full expression.

2019 was very low yielding and very high quality.  Below average winter rainfalls leading into 2019 combined with a warm (but not hot) growing and harvest season produced low yields of small berried very intense fruit with amazing structure. The cooler than average season protected aromatics and resulted in fresh, bright wines with good acidity.

The idea here is to make the best wine I can from what the vineyard provides me each year. A meticulous approach to classification in the vineyard, during fermentation and maturation, and prior to assembling the final blend ensures only a very small quantity of this wine is bottled. In 2019 only 1146 bottles were produced.

The nose shows plenty of  liquorice and wafts of eucalypt with a touch of meaty/ savoury character emerging as the wine begins to show the benefits of bottle ageing. True to type from this vineyard, this is a wine that is all about texture whilst being full flavoured and having great concentration and length. The pure Shiraz fruit characters of dark cherry and chocolate drive down the palate, all framed with chalky tannin and that trademark Utopos acidity. Drink now to 20 years
