97/100 ā Ray Jordan Ā· 2018 Vintage
āThe best wine yet from Twinwoods. Now this is something special. Itās powerful and concentrated yet there is poise and polish here that is reserved for the very best wines. Plush blackcurrant and dark chocolate with edgier notes of bay leaf and black olive tapenade. The palate has a distinctive oyster shell minerality with fine chalky tannins adding their structural component. Itās a firmer style with a tight core. Plenty of cellaring time here.ā
95/100 ā Winepilot Ā· 2018 Vintage Ā· Tasted Aug 2024
āAgain, for me, the 2018 is the slightly superior wine between the two vintages. A cracking wine. Similar winemaking to the earlier year. Under cork. Near black in colour, the nose exhibits black olives, dried herbs, vegemite notes, coffee beans, dark chocolate, cloves, soy, miso and dark chocolate. Still very young, the wine is intense with deftly handled oak and really good focus. Juicy acidity rides the length with silky tannins towards the finish. There is real length here which is seriously impressive so feel free to enjoy this wine for the next two decades.ā
About This Wine
Twinwoods Estate Optivus Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is from Margaret River, Western Australia.
The Twinwoods Estate Vineyard is located on the south eastern catchment of Wilyabrup Creek in the locality of Cowaramup, approximately 30 kilometres north of the Margaret River township, regarded as a prime growing area for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Twinwoods is a 25 hectare property planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is managed using principles of minimal chemical inputs and largely dry grown. Twinwoods focus on elegant Cabernet Sauvignon for which the region is famed.
About the Region
The Margaret River wine region was established following Dr. John Gladstonesā recommendation that its Mediterranean maritime climate was well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The region has high winter rainfall and warm, dry summers. Proximity to the ocean plays a significant role in moderating temperatures.
Ancient granite bedrock and limestone outcrops have formed soils well suited to premium grape cultivation, including gravelly surface layers over loamy topsoil and clay subsoil. Cabernet Sauvignon was first planted in Margaret River in 1967.
