The 2018 Poonawatta The 1880 Shiraz is the estate’s flagship expression of its original Eden Valley vineyard. Its identity begins with a small block planted in 1880, where surviving vines remain at the centre of the family’s winemaking story.

The vineyard is recognised as an Ancestor vineyard under the Barossa Old Vine Charter. Rather than a regional blend, The 1880 reflects one site and the long relationship between its vines, soils and custodians.

Vintage & Winemaking

The original vineyard covers 0.8 hectare, on deep loam beside a watercourse. Its sheltered, cool location sheds heat quickly after summer days; the soil profile and established roots help sustain the vines through dry seasons.

Winemaker Andrew Holt describes the site’s enduring contribution as a balance of structure and intensity, with a cooler thread of elegance. The 2018 bottle is individually numbered, retaining the estate’s emphasis on small-volume production.

Aroma: In October 2022, JamesSuckling.com’s published assessment of the 2018 noted ripe blueberry and plum, with spice, tobacco and nutty, woody complexity.

About the Producer

The Holt family restored the original vineyard to the Poonawatta property in 1971. Andrew and Michelle Holt established the wine brand in 2002, continuing an Eden Valley farming heritage that stretches across generations. The estate’s focus remains on small vineyard parcels and wines that express their origins.
