Overview

La Chiave is Castagna's 100% Sangiovese from Beechworth, Victoria. The 2018 combines savoury complexity and fine structure with the estate's terroir-focused approach, showing a more sinewy, energetic expression of Sangiovese with impressive length and grip.

Vineyard

Castagna's vineyard is situated at approximately 500 metres near Beechworth in north-east Victoria, in the foothills of the Australian Alps. Planted in 1997, the vineyard lies on predominantly decomposed granitic loam with quartz over clay and has been farmed biodynamically from the beginning. It is fully certified organic and biodynamic.

95/100 — Huon Hooke: “Medium-deep bright red-purple colour with a smoky, spicy, slightly nutty and smoked charcuterie bouquet that is complex and savoury. The palate is finely structured and penetrating, taut and long, the elegance of the wine unquestioned and the length also, tannins fine and discreet while adding the requisite structure and grip. A more sinewy, almost nervy wine compared to Un Segreto 2018, and very smart. (100% sangiovese)”
