Overview

Penfolds Grange is one of Australia’s most iconic and collectible wines. Sourced from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, the 2017 vintage is only the seventh Grange produced entirely from Shiraz during the wine’s first 70 years.

Vintage and Winemaking

The 2017 Grange is composed of 100% Shiraz from selected South Australian vineyards. The wine matured for 18 months in new American oak hogsheads, building the structure and longevity associated with this celebrated multi-regional style.

“Only the 7th Grange ever made with 100% Shiraz. Dark chocolate coats ripe blueberry, vanilla hovers above, as does a sense of smoke and darkest berry – and then the chocolate appears again alongside nutmeg. The palate then dives into generous, ripe, juicy fruit before bold, tight, muscular, flexed, fine tannins take a hold and assert themselves relentlessly. There is so much personality here. Leave for a decade at least and drink until 2060.”

“The colour is purple/black after spending 18 months in new American oak hogsheads. The nose is classic toast and smoke with fragrant, spicy, savoury blueberry, plummy fruit that lingers forever. The palate is rich but glossy, with dense, fine-grained tannin under the smoked meat, blackberry, and chocolate. Best of all, the finish goes on for an eternity.”

“This starts with a deeply spicy and brooding nose that packs plenty of (100% new) American oak, some smoked vanilla and ripe dark plums and berries. The palate has a youthful, astringent feel with sinewy oak tannin and deep plum and dark-berry flavors, carrying a big frame of fruit extract. Big, round berries strive towards boldness. A blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. 100% shiraz. Drink over the next two decades.”
