The 2017 Noon Winery Eclipse is the flagship wine of Drew Noon and one of Australia's most highly regarded Rhône-inspired blends. Produced in limited quantities from vineyards across McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, Eclipse has earned a cult following for its remarkable concentration, complexity, and ageing potential.
Named after the total solar eclipse that occurred on the day Drew Noon was born, Eclipse reflects both family tradition and the unique character of South Australia's finest Mediterranean grape-growing regions. The 2017 blend comprises 90% Grenache, 6% Shiraz and 4% Graciano.
The 2017 growing season was particularly favourable, with abundant spring moisture followed by warm, dry conditions during the final stages of ripening. The small crop achieved exceptional concentration while retaining freshness and natural balance, producing a wine of impressive depth and purity.
Hand-harvested fruit was fermented with minimal intervention before maturation in seasoned French oak. Healthy fruit and naturally balanced ferments allowed the vineyard character to shine through, resulting in a wine that is powerful without heaviness and rich without sacrificing elegance.
The bouquet reveals layers of raspberry, wild strawberry, red cherry and blackberry, complemented by notes of liquorice, exotic spice, dried herbs, earth and subtle woody complexity. The palate is full-bodied yet beautifully poised, with concentrated red and dark berry fruits, silky texture, fine tannins and exceptional length. Grenache provides the wine's aromatic lift and generosity, while Shiraz contributes structure and depth, and Graciano adds freshness and complexity.
Now entering a superb drinking window, the 2017 Eclipse is showing beautifully but still has the balance and structure to evolve for another decade or more.
