96/100 — Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate · 2016 Vintage, Tasted: 21 Jun 2024
“It’s 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Shiraz, matured for 18 months in 40% new French oak. So, on the nose, the wine leads with dark chocolate and olive tapenade, roast beef crust and cocoa. The fruit in the mouth is dark and dense, and it has a tobacco, pipe smoke, dried fruit/Christmas cake spice inflection running through it. The texture is dense and chewy, but the wine exudes confidence and balance in equal measure. It’s a powerful wine, and it’s impressively in balance.”
95/100 — Andrew Caillard, The Vintage Journal · 2016 Vintage, Tasted: Aug 2024
“Deep crimson. Blackcurrant, hint mocha graphite, sage aromas with hints of tobacco leaf. Inky deep wine with ample blackcurrant, black cherry fruits, fine grained – touch al dente/ cedary tannins and underlying mocha, hint creme brulee notes. Finshes claret firm and bitter sweet. A classic cabernet wine with lovely density, volume and grip. Drink now – 2034.”
James Suckling · 2016 Vintage, Tasted: Oct 2024
“The nose is seriously complex, with layers of blackcurrants, blood plums, tobacco leaves, graphite and cured meat. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberry bush, ferric earth, iodine, mocha and dried herbs. A wonderfully balanced blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% shiraz from an average vine age of 110 years. Released after six years in bottle. Excellent. Drink or hold.”
About This Wine
Integro was developed to express depth, elegance and structure from exceptional sites in the Barossa, with a focus on Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for cooler-climate ripening and classic varietal character. A smaller portion of Shiraz is blended in to build mid-palate richness and soften the tannin profile.
The 2016 vintage experienced low winter and spring rainfall followed by a warm summer, with timely rain in late January supporting dry-grown vines. Parcels were fermented separately and matured in oak for 18 months prior to blending.
About the Winery
John Duval Wines was founded by John Duval, one of Australia’s most internationally respected winemakers, from a family with four generations of South Australian vignerons. John Duval was named International Winemaker of the Year in 1989 and twice Red Winemaker of the Year in 1991 and 2000.
After 28 years with Penfolds, including 16 years as Chief Winemaker, John Duval established his own label to craft wines that express the terroir of the Barossa with a hand-crafted approach. The winery now welcomes second generation winemaker Tim Duval, continuing the focus on old vine Barossa fruit and site-driven expression.
