“Now quite evolved (from a 375mL bottle), look for a medium amber colour and lots of dried orange, lemon, honey, and nuts on the nose, lacking the overt oak of a Sauternes or the racy acidity of a Tokaji. The palate is unctuous with 231 g/L residual sugar, but with surprising freshness on the palate (9.9 g/L total acidity) due to the concentrating effect of using botrytis-affected fruit. The concentration is superb, with pronounced botrytis character that shows why Noble One is one of the world’s great sweet wines. And it’s all yours at a very affordable price, too. I like this as a dessert on its own, and don’t feel like you need to finish the entire bottle in one sitting. It’ll hold in your fridge for at least 2-3 weeks. (Geoffrey Moss MW).”
About This Wine
Darren De Bortoli created Noble One at the family winery in 1982, and it remains one of the most awarded wines in history.
More than three decades after this pioneering Botrytis Semillon took the world by storm, Noble One remains the benchmark of Australian botrytis dessert winemaking.
The 2014 vintage followed a hot dry summer before late February showers and cooler temperatures initiated the onset of botrytis across the vineyards.
Regular rainfall in the following weeks allowed botrytis to flourish, with harvesting taking place over a number of weeks during April.
The fruit was sourced from vineyards with a long history of producing botrytis Semillon. Individual parcels were harvested, fermented and matured separately before blending to capture the character of Noble One.
Producer Notes
Bright golden colour with expressive aromas of cumquats, nectarines, apricots, mandarin peel and integrated fresh vanillin oak. A medley of botrytis fruit flavours, citrus and a touch of butterscotch with a glace pineapple tang to a long alluring palate. A fine balance of oak, sweetness and acidity that gives finesse to a powerful botrytis spectrum.
