The 2014 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier is one of Australia's most iconic Rhône-inspired wines, setting the benchmark for the co-fermented Shiraz and Viognier style. Produced by Clonakilla in the cool-climate Canberra District, this celebrated wine combines fragrance, elegance, and remarkable ageing potential.

The 2014 growing season presented several challenges, including spring frost, hail, a late-January heatwave, and autumn rain. Careful vineyard selection and meticulous fruit sorting ensured only the finest parcels of Shiraz and approximately 5% Viognier were co-fermented, resulting in a wine of exceptional balance and complexity.

Inspired by the great wines of Côte-Rôtie, the Shiraz and Viognier are co-fermented to enhance colour stability, aromatic lift, and texture. The wine is matured in French oak, allowing the fruit and savoury complexity to remain the defining features.

The bouquet is intensely perfumed, revealing dark cherry, blackberry, plum, violet, orange blossom, spice, cracked pepper, and subtle smoked meat, with hints of cedar, anise, and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied yet remarkably concentrated, combining vibrant dark fruit with silky texture, fine-grained tannins, bright natural acidity, and an exceptionally long, savoury finish. It is a wine that effortlessly balances power with finesse.

Awarded 96 points by James Halliday and 95 points by Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front), the 2014 vintage is regarded as another outstanding release in Clonakilla's remarkable legacy.
