Fruit for the 2014 vintage was sourced from old, low-yielding Shiraz and Grenache vines across the Barossa Valley. The growing season delivered excellent ripeness with retained natural acidity, providing ideal conditions for a wine that combines depth with precision. Grenache contributes aromatic lift, red-fruited charm, and silky texture, while Shiraz adds structure, dark fruit intensity, and savoury depth.
In the winery, each variety was hand-harvested and fermented separately in small batches, allowing precise control over extraction and varietal expression. Traditional winemaking techniques were employed to build complexity without excess weight. The wine was matured in French oak barrels for an extended period, integrating spice and savoury nuance while preserving freshness and balance.
The 2014 Nine Popes opens with expressive aromas of black cherry, plum, raspberry, and dried herbs, layered with notes of liquorice, clove, earth, and subtle cedar. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, refined and harmonious, with fine-grained tannins, excellent mid-palate concentration, and a long, savoury finish. While approachable now with decanting, the wine retains the structure and freshness to continue ageing gracefully.
