Overview

A mature, old-vine Gippsland Pinot Noir from the original Bass Phillip Estate vineyard. Awarded 96 points by Jeremy Oliver, the 2014 combines Pinot Noir’s aromatic elegance with concentrated fruit, smoky savouriness, mineral detail and a satiny texture.

Vineyard

The fruit comes from a specific parcel within the original, densely planted Estate vineyard, which contains approximately 8,500 vines per hectare. The selected plot yields around one tonne per acre and may be blended with the finest fruit from Bass Phillip’s Leongatha Vineyard.

Winemaking

The wine was fermented in open stainless-steel fermenters with regular plunging to extract colour and flavour. Following fermentation, it was transferred by gravity into French Allier oak, comprising approximately 60% new barrels and 40% seasoned barrels.

Maturation continued for approximately 15 to 18 months. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration, preserving its natural texture and vineyard expression.

Forget the price and, indeed, the position this holds in the Bass Phillip hierarchy. It’s all drive and dare, power and glory, the combination of satiny texture and minerally, smoky savouriness an exercise in pure seduction.
