About This Wine
Volnay-Santenots Premier Cru Cuvée Jehan de Massol is produced from vineyards in Volnay within the Côte de Beaune, Burgundy.
The cuvée is composed of parcels from Santenots du Dessous, Santenots du Milieu and Les Plures.
The differing clay and chalk compositions of these sites contribute to a wine of richness, density and structure, while maintaining the elegance expected of Volnay.
This wine was vinified by the Domaine des Hospices de Beaune and purchased through the annual Hospices de Beaune auction before maturation in the cellars of Albert Bichot.
The cuvée is named after Jéhan de Massol, whose family made an important bequest to the Hôtel-Dieu of Beaune, helping preserve the institution and its heritage.
Producer Notes
Superb, intense red colour.
An enveloping and harmonious nose of red fruit with a hint of spice.
Fine and almost delicate on the palate with very good ageing potential.
Recommended pairings include coq au vin, country salad and leg of lamb.
Vineyard & History
The Cuvée is composed of Premiers Crus Les Plures and Les Santenots.
More than 30% of the vines were planted between 1948 and 1959. The remaining vineyard holdings have an average vine age of 51 years for 0.79 hectares and 33 years for 0.26 hectares.
The Italian physician Augustino Mazzoli settled in Beaune and served as one of the Hôtel-Dieu's first doctors. His descendant Jéhan de Massol later bequeathed a collection of artworks that helped save the institution from financial ruin.
