Overview

Un Segreto brings together Sangiovese and Syrah from Castagna in Beechworth, combining the savoury, powdery tannins of Sangiovese with the richness of Syrah. The 2013 is a mature, distinctive Australian interpretation of this classic Mediterranean partnership, showing complexity, freshness and a long, savoury profile.

Vineyard

Castagna's vineyard lies at approximately 500 metres near Beechworth in north-east Victoria, in the foothills of the Australian Alps. Planted in 1997, the vineyard is farmed biodynamically and is fully certified organic and biodynamic. Its soils are predominantly decomposed granitic loam with quartz over a clay base.

Critic Reviews

95/100 — Jeremy Oliver
Tasted January 2014
Drinking Window: 2021–2025

92/100 — Huon Hooke: “Very deep colour with a rich, fully ripe bouquet of dark cherry, dark chocolate and spices, with a flick of black pepper. It’s medium to full-bodied and rich, smoothly textured and ripely soft in its tannins. Very good red wine, if not that obvious in its varietal make-up. Long, warming finish.”
Tasted 20 January 2016
Drinking Window: 2016–2031

James Suckling: “The nose is finely integrated and complex, with aromas of dark cherries, tobacco leaves, Damson plums and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a generous mouthfeel, showing notes of dried herbs, rose petals, coffee beans and earth. Wonderfully balanced and vibrant, with polished tannins. A blend of 60% sangiovese and 40% syrah. Tasted after nine years in bottle. Drink or hold.”
Tasted October 2024

Winewise: “Aromatically complex with aromas of freshly turned earth, cigar box and sour cherry linked by lovely floral notes. The palate is vibrant and fresh with subtle notes of fine grained oak framed by fine powdery tannins, which gives the wine a textural richness. Cinnamon, nutmeg, star anise and cardamom add complexity. Dry and savoury without any hint of sweetness bringing together the best of both varieties.”
