Established in 1963 by Reg and Jessie Egan, Wantirna Estate remains a cornerstone of Yarra Valley winemaking tradition. Now under the care of Maryann Egan, the family’s second generation, the estate continues to craft small-lot wines of purity, grace, and longevity — each release deeply rooted in its historic vineyard.
Wine Overview
Named after the family’s third generation, ‘Amelia’ captures the classical Bordeaux blend style — a poised union of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It reflects the estate’s hallmark: elegant structure balanced by supple texture and gentle power.
Vineyard
Planted on gravelly clay-loam soils near the Yarra River, Wantirna’s mature, low-yielding vines are dry-grown to ensure depth and concentration. The cool climate and long growing season of the Yarra Valley nurture wines of fine acidity, aromatic clarity, and exceptional balance.
Winemaking
Each component was fermented separately in small open fermenters with hand plunging for gentle extraction. Maturation took place over 18 months in French oak barriques (approximately one-third new), followed by careful blending and minimal handling prior to bottling.
Vintage
The 2012 vintage was cool and even, producing fruit with excellent flavour intensity, bright natural acidity, and superb balance. It is considered one of the most harmonious Yarra Valley vintages of the decade.
