Overview

The 2012 Langmeil “The Freedom 1843” Shiraz is a monumental Barossa Valley wine drawn from some of the oldest producing Shiraz vines in the world. Sourced exclusively from the historic Freedom Vineyard planted in 1843, this vintage captures the depth, intensity, and natural authority that only ancient vines can deliver. The outstanding 2012 season produced a wine of power, balance, and remarkable ageing potential.

Vineyard and Winemaking

The Freedom Vineyard, established in 1843, is home to dry-grown, low-yielding Shiraz vines that produce fruit of exceptional concentration and character. Harvested by hand, the grapes were vinified with traditional methods to preserve vineyard expression and varietal purity. Maturation took place in carefully selected oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop structure and complexity while maintaining balance and clarity.

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson in colour, the wine opens with intense aromas of blackberry, dark plum, and mulberry, layered with notes of licorice, dark chocolate, spice, and subtle earth. The palate is rich and expansive, delivering dense dark fruit, savoury undertones, and firm yet polished tannins. Bright acidity provides lift and definition, carrying through to a long, powerful, and composed finish.

Style and Character

The 2012 vintage showcases The Freedom’s signature presence — bold yet refined, deeply concentrated yet harmoniously balanced. It is a wine that speaks eloquently of vine age and Barossa terroir, offering both immediate impact and long-term promise. A true flagship expression with serious collector appeal.

Cellaring and Service

Approachable now with decanting, yet capable of graceful evolution over 20–30 years. Decant well in advance when young. Ideal for milestone celebrations, fine dining, or collectors seeking a rare and historically significant Australian Shiraz.
