The 2010 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is a benchmark Australian blend from one of the greatest modern South Australian vintages. Produced by Penfolds, Bin 389 is affectionately known as “Baby Grange” due to its partial maturation in barrels previously used for Grange, combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz in a distinctly Penfolds style.
The exceptional 2010 vintage delivered fruit of remarkable concentration, balance, and tannin quality across South Australia. Sourced from premium vineyards in regions including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, and Padthaway, the blend captures both regional complexity and Penfolds’ multi-district blending philosophy.
In the winery, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz parcels were fermented separately before maturation in American oak hogsheads, a proportion of which had previously held Grange. This approach contributes depth, spice, and structural integration while allowing the fruit to remain the dominant feature.
Now with over a decade of bottle age, the wine reveals an expressive bouquet of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum layered with notes of cedar, mocha, vanilla, liquorice, spice, and subtle leather complexity. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, with concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and vibrant acidity driving a long, savoury finish.
The 2010 Bin 389 is entering a magnificent drinking window yet still possesses the structure and balance to continue evolving over the next 10–20+ years under ideal cellaring conditions. Decanting is recommended if enjoyed now.
A classic and highly collectible Penfolds release combining power, polish, and exceptional ageing pedigree.
