Overview

Craggy Range Sophia is a Merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend from Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay. Conceived as a refined expression of its terroir, the 2010 vintage brings together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, combining ripe dark fruit with fine tannins, freshness and savoury complexity.

Vintage

The 2010 vintage was characterised by a cool, dry autumn and very good growing conditions.

Winemaking

The blend comprises 63% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The fruit was fully destemmed and underwent inoculated fermentation in closed-top French oak cuves, followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak barriques.

Producer Tasting Notes

Craggy Range: “Dark garnet core colour. Spicy notes of cinnamon and freshly roasted espresso beans combine with oak and herb notes of cedar and thyme to overlay a ripe blackcurrant base aroma. The palate exudes elegance via a balance of fine layered tannin and mid palate fruit presence.”

Critic Reviews

95 Points — James Halliday, The Weekend Australian: “Bright and crystal clear; nuances of spice and toasted cedary oak float around the blackcurrant/cassis fruit of the bouquet and palate, the latter an elegant and perfectly tensioned exercise in freshness and ripeness.”

95 Points — Bob Campbell: “63% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Dense wine with hints of berry, plum, spice/anise/floral and oak. Powerful red that's hard to read at this stage but showing impressive potential. A backbone of fine, dusty tannins restrain fruit flavours and leads to a drying finish.”
