Grant Burge, a fifth-generation Barossa vigneron, established his eponymous winery in 1988. The flagship Meshach Shiraz, first released in 1988, is named in honour of his great-great-grandfather, Meshach Burge. It represents the pinnacle of Barossa Shiraz, produced only in outstanding vintages and sourced from some of the regionâs oldest, low-yielding vines.
Vineyard
The fruit for Meshach is drawn from hand-selected parcels of old vines across the Barossa Valley, some over 100 years old. These deep-rooted vines deliver intensely concentrated fruit with low yields, capturing the true essence of Barossa Shiraz.
Vintage
2009 was a strong vintage in the Barossa, following a hot and dry summer that concentrated flavours in the berries. Yields were low, but the resulting Shiraz fruit was ripe, powerful, and deeply expressiveâideal conditions for crafting a Meshach of richness and longevity.
Tasting Notes
The 2009 Meshach is a dense, inky purple colour. Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, liquorice, mocha, and smoky oak leap from the glass, supported by notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent, with layers of ripe black fruits, chocolate, anise, and pepper. Silky yet firm tannins provide structure, while well-judged oak contributes balance and complexity. The finish is long, powerful, and savoury, with the capacity to evolve gracefully for decades.
