Overview

Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles Premier Cru is one of Burgundy's great white wines, sitting just below grand cru level in reputation and refinement. From one of Puligny's most celebrated Premier Cru sites, Les Pucelles combines floral elegance, mineral tension and the depth expected from Domaine Leflaive.

The 2009 vintage is now a mature, collectible release from one of Burgundy's benchmark Chardonnay domaines. Domaine Leflaive has long been recognised for biodynamic viticulture, precision winemaking and wines of exceptional ageing potential.

Vineyard & Terroir

Les Pucelles comes from clay-limestone soils in one of Puligny-Montrachet's most celebrated Premier Cru sites. Domaine Leflaive's holding covers approximately 2.75 hectares, with vines planted in 1963, 1969, 1981, 1985 and 2012.

Viticulture

The wine is made from biodynamically grown Chardonnay grapes. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with sorting and careful parcel-by-parject ripeness monitoring to determine the optimal picking date.

Winemaking

Vinification includes long, gentle pneumatic pressing, 24-hour settling, then racking into barrels. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in oak casks. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrel on lees, followed by 10 months in stainless steel tank on fine lees. Fining and light filtration are used only if necessary.

Vintage

The 2009 vintage began with mild, regular spring weather after several heavy winter frosts. May was fine and sunny, with flowering beginning on 22 May and full flowering around 27-28 May. June and July brought short periods of heavy rain, while August was outstanding, combining long sunny spells, timely rainfall and very warm weather between 13 and 20 August.

Harvest began on 5 September and finished on 11 September under warm, sunny conditions. The musts were rich, powerful and full of sunshine, fermenting steadily through autumn. The finished wines are rich, fruit-filled and marked by mineral character.
