“An elegant, medium to full-bodied Hunter classic. Its smoky, floral bouquet of wild, brambly plums, cherries and blackberries, fresh new cedary oak reveals musky, spicy undertones and a hit of liqueur chocolate. Building in weight and intensity towards a sumptuous and savoury crescendo, the palate is dark, meaty and smoky, with a fabulous length of sour-edged fruit backed by nuances of roast chestnuts, tar and bramble.”

94+/100 — Gary Walsh, The Wine Front · 2007 Vintage
“Good smelling wine - earthy with smoky oak, a shake of black pepper and sweet cherry fruit. It's mid-weight, graceful and fully at ease with itself. The delightful regional earthiness and fruit purity strongly suggest it needs time in bottle to express itself fully.”
93/100 — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate · 2007 Vintage
“The 2007 Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is holding firmly to its youthful deep garnet-purple color. Very pretty, cool-climate fruit nose: violets, dark cherry, cumin, vanilla, anise, cassis and a bit of tar. Medium bodied with a tightly knit, elegantly fruited palate. Medium-high level of fine tannins and medium to high acid. Concentrated. Very long finish.”
About This Wine
Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is the flagship red wine of Brokenwood and one of the Hunter Valley’s most celebrated single-vineyard wines.
The vineyard was originally planted with Shiraz in 1970 on extremely heavy clay soils, producing naturally low yields with concentrated fruit intensity.
The vineyard takes its name from a cemetery that occupied the site in the nineteenth century, with original cemetery plans dating from 1882 preserved at the Brokenwood tasting room.
The vineyard was established using Shiraz cuttings sourced from some of the Hunter Valley's oldest vineyards, including Tyrrell's and McWilliams.
