The 2006 Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz is a commanding and beautifully matured expression from one of the Barossa Valley’s most iconic producers. Created to showcase the very best Shiraz from the region’s finest low-yielding vineyards, Stonewell stands as the pinnacle of Peter Lehmann’s red-winemaking philosophy — powerful, deeply fruited and built for decades of evolution. The 2006 vintage is regarded as one of the great Stonewell releases of the 2000s, offering richness, structure and exceptional longevity.
The 2006 growing season in the Barossa was warm and dry, producing small, intensely flavoured berries with thick skins and superb tannin maturity. These conditions played perfectly to the Stonewell style, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration and depth. Fruit for this vintage was sourced from some of the region’s oldest vineyards, including parcels in Marananga, Greenock and Moppa — areas known for producing Shiraz of profound colour and power.
The bouquet is rich and expressive, opening with aromas of blackberry, black plum, dark cherry and mulberry. Layers of licorice, dark chocolate, espresso, cedar and warm spice build complexity. Subtle notes of dried herbs, tar and smoked meats reflect both vineyard character and extended maturation in high-quality oak.
On the palate, the 2006 Stonewell Shiraz is full-bodied, dense and impeccably structured. A surge of concentrated black fruit fills the mid-palate, supported by firm, fine-grained tannins that give the wine drive and longevity. Hints of cocoa, mocha, vanilla, anise and roasted coffee add luxurious depth. Despite its richness, the wine maintains balance through a fresh line of acidity that carries through to a long, powerful and resonant finish.
Now entering a superb drinking window, the 2006 Stonewell showcases both the muscularity of classic Barossa Shiraz and the refinement that defines the Stonewell label. Well-stored bottles continue to evolve gracefully and will reward further cellaring.
