Overview
A rare Magnum presentation of Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz, a historic single-vineyard wine intrinsically linked to the origins of Penfolds. First produced in 1983, Magill Estate is sourced from the original vineyard on the eastern edge of Adelaide and is made entirely on-site at the original Penfolds Magill winery. The 2006 vintage combines concentrated Shiraz fruit, savoury complexity, fine tannins and carefully integrated oak, earning 97 points from James Halliday.
Vineyard
The 2006 Magill Estate Shiraz was sourced entirely from the original 5.2-hectare Magill Estate vineyard, specifically Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Situated approximately eight kilometres from Adelaide’s CBD, this historic vineyard is carefully managed through techniques including sacrificial canes, fruit thinning and relegation to optimise fruit quality.
Vintage
The 2006 growing season was relatively early, with low rainfall and warm weather contributing to early budburst and flowering. Mild to warm conditions followed through summer, while well-timed rainfall before harvest assisted ripening. Picking commenced on 21 February 2006.
Winemaking
The fruit was hand-picked, crushed and vinified in open fermenters before basket pressing. Winemaking involved barrel fermentation, batching and subsequent separation of ferments. The wine was matured for 14 months in 71% new French oak hogsheads and 29% new American oak hogsheads.
Producer Tasting Notes
COLOUR: Dark red - to the rim.
NOSE: Perfumed and sweeter with air - potpourri florals, cola, nut and fig / quince paste. Consomme, savoury nuances - pea n' ham avec bone. Barrel fermentation, 100% new oak maturation, open fermenters and basket-pressing all leave their subtle yet recognisable aromatic imprints.
PALATE: Small, dark fruits - cranberry, redcurrant, dark cherry alongside green olive, with mocha / malt. Surprisingly succulent / juicy with smokey barrel ferment notes, fresh tobacco & cedar. A sheet of fine-grained tannins, balanced oak and mouthwatering acidity sign off texturally.
