Château Lafite Rothschild, the name itself a whisper of prestige in the world of fine wine, needs little introduction. Yet, the 2005 vintage transcends mere reputation, emerging as a masterclass in elegance and aging potential. From its meticulously nurtured grapes to its patiently crafted palate, this Lafite Rothschild unveils a tapestry of flavours waiting to be explored.
Following harvest, the chosen grapes embarked on a meticulous journey. Each batch fermented in small vessels, coaxing out their individual character. Then, for 18 to 20 months, they slumbered in the embrace of 100% new French oak barrels. This extended aging, a hallmark of great Lafite Rothschild vintages, imparted subtle tannins and whispers of oak, weaving them seamlessly into the tapestry of the wine.
Acclaim from the Masters:
The 2005 Lafite Rothschild has garnered universal praise from the world's most discerning palates. Decanter Magazine lauds its "deep, dark ruby-red" color and "classic Lafite" nose, while Jeff Leve of The Wine Cellar Insider highlights its "elegance and refined character" and its unfolding complexity. Even the ever-critical Jancis Robinson MW bestows it with a resounding 18/20, commending its "excellent freshness" and "good concentration of deep, dark fruit."
Expert tasting note: (2005 vintage) "A deep, dark rub-red color, with red-purple tinges at the rim. Aromas are restrained dark fruits with touches of liquorice & well-integrated toasty oak. The fruit on the palate starts as a brooding dark berry note that is lifted by lively acidity. The palate is initially lean and cedary but develops fabulously in the mouth revealing lively red-fruits that endure superbly. Alcohol is balanced & a wonderfully fine oak structure is seamlessly entwined with the fruit on the finish." - 11/09 DCAMW
