97/100 — Christer Byklum · 2003 Vintage · Tasting Date: Feb 2023
“Ruby. Cassis, that for me at least, Mouton exotic spices is there, some liquorice, blackberries, detailed nose, intense and layered. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, detailed, intense, tobacco, spices, cassis, blackberries, layered, nuanced, goes on and on, deep, maybe not lively but definitely fine tuned and smooth, stunning length.”
About the Label
Label Art: Baroness Philippine de Rothschild (1812–1878)
The 2003 vintage marks the 150th anniversary of Mouton’s entry into the family to which it has since belonged without interruption for five generations.
Baroness Philippine de Rothschild has therefore decided to depart from tradition by devoting the entire label to Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (1812–1878), her direct ancestor from the English branch of the family who acquired the Mouton estate on 11 May 1853.
Baron Nathaniel is depicted on the label in a period photograph. The background shows part of the deed of sale. This document, carefully preserved in the Mouton archives, marks the beginning of a long love story between the Rothschilds and the great wines of Bordeaux.
Vintage Notes
2003 will remain in the memory as the year of a heatwave summer and an early vintage. After a cold and dry winter, 37% less rain fell in the spring than the average for the last 40 years. August was exceptionally hot, with temperatures frequently rising above 40°C and less rainfall than normal for the season.
However the vines, being deeply-rooted, never really suffered from a lack of water and produced a crop of healthy, richly coloured and tannic grapes.
Producer Notes
The wine has a beautifully intense, garnet hue and a highly refined nose, rather typical of Cabernet, on aromas of blackcurrant and cedarwood along with caramel and stewed fruit.
The attack is lush, the palate rich, on stylish well-rounded tannins; fruit flavours rub shoulders with spice, Havana cigar and eucalyptus. The finish is very expressive, long and powerful, harmonious and silky.
Mouton Rothschild 2003 is one of the great successes of recent years.
